Role models: Teaching us the life lesson of achievement

Everyone has some specific dream or aspiration in life. It could be something you have wished for since as far back as you can remember or it could be a goal or ambition that has developed particular significance over time. Whether this dream is something you have merely plucked from the sky or have long felt an affinity with, there is one common denominator to our aspirations: a role model.

If you think about it, for every role, career or profession that we aspire to, there is a success story or figure of inspiration behind that aspiration. Aspiring mothers or carers will look to the example set by a parent or family member. Career high-fliers will look to those who have reached the pinnacle of their field or subject area; while those seeking to make a difference will cite history’s lauded legends and seek to emulate their success.

Who our role models are can have significant bearing upon our lives. Aside from the inspiration that a success story in any field can instill in a person, it is always encouraging to know that you are on the right track and there is proof that your dreams can be achieved.

Taking my own story for instance; while I have never doubted my drive to succeed, something which has always driven me on along my journey is the example set by some of my most treasured role models.

I have spoken before about my admiration for Stephen Hawking; I am constantly astounded and encouraged by how one person can use their talents and knowledge to make such a huge difference in the world, and for this, I look up to him.

Such a positive influence can work miracles on a person’s spirit of determination and drive to achieve, which is why a good role model is an essential part of our lives.

Just as in our school books each new lesson started with a good example, so the formula continues on throughout life. Not only does a role model show how it is done but most importantly, they show us that it can be done.
